Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs

June 22, 2008

The same old gang from Futurama are back. This seems to be the route of over spent shows that are in perpetual reruns. Stargate and Futurama are releasing new movies based on the TV series. With sales of DVDs going through the roof, this seems the logic way to go for shows that demand big budgets. Create movies and expand on the ideas that were presented on the shows. Sometimes you get a better product, Fox seems to be onto something good. The new Futurama movie is based on the formulistic success that they have enjoyed and they deliver once again. The movie includes bonus features such as a "lost Futurama episode" never aired on TV.

In Futurama’s latest and most tentacle-packed epic, space itself rips open, revealing a gateway to another universe. But what lies beyond? Horror? Love? Or maybe both, if it happens to contain a repulsive, planet-sized monster with romantic intentions! Nothing less than the fate of human and robot-kind is at stake as the Futurama crew takes on The Beast with a Billion Backs.

Hulk2 a Smash

June 15, 2008

The Hulk would definitely fail any anger management control class. The second attempt to bring the Hulk to the big screen is a success with the emphasis on a more humane Bruce Banner that tips homage to the original TV series. The only reminiscent inkling of the first big screen first movie are cameo appearances by Stan Lee and original TV Hulk Lou Ferrigno. Edward Norton who plays Bruce Banner makes him a more compassionate character and Tim Roth his nemesis in the film is a well rounded villain. The movie is a more back to basics to the original premise of the comic books. Marvel seems to be hitting a double barrelled hit with their second in-house movie. Their control of their characters is something of wonder because most publishers will just hand out their rights to  properties to make a fast buck and Marvel is guilty of that in the past where Hollywood really gave us dogs with some Marvel characters. Captain America , Spider-man, the Fantastic Four, Doctor Strange, and Thor at one time were real turkeys of movies in early incarnations. Marvel seems to be a big player now in Hollywood after two movies, this is great news for all. These characters will finally see the light of day as they were supposed to be.

New Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers Movies

May 22, 2008

With the biggest summer of comic book related movies to hit the big screen. What can be concluded with the cache of four color related movies. One, it is about time. Two, people can’t read anymore and comics is the best way to get a visual of your movie and within an hour (being generous) you can read a comic and you have a perfect idea what a movie will look like. Who needs to read a book? Comics is the way to go. Now the comic industry is getting wiser and making comics that will translate better into movies. From Indy to major publishers this is the pinnacle for the industry to get character recognition that will generate more revue for the publisher. It would be conclusive that the publishers want a bigger piece of the pie with the rights to the property. So what is a movie studio to do? Go out and get rights of characters that are either close to public domain or where most of the work is already in public domain.

Classic case are both Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon that were acquired by movie studios for big treatments and re-visioning the characters. Nu Image/Millennium Films got the rights to Buck Rogers and Sony Pictures won the bidding rights to Flash Gordon. Here are two characters that ruled the early part of the 20th Century in newspapers and serial movies. They got outdone by real science that made their pulp rooted stories seem childish at best. These pillars of illustrated sci-fi grandpas will once grace the screens with new stories. They never seem to get it right with these two. I think the best thing for them is if they could get them both in the same movie and battle it out for the sci-fi retirement home in the sky.

The Return of The Electric Company

May 13, 2008

With the advent of gaming and lackluster interest in reading, illiteracy is on the rise. Who better to come to the rescue but Letterman and Easy Ready from the Electric Company. Turn up those generators cause the "The Electric Company" is coming back this January on PBS to help the young tykes to be better readers. Will Spidey be back once again to the series? Not much is known, but this is good news if the series is made in the same vein as the original series that ran from 1971-1977 which featured Morgan Freeman and was syndicated till 1985.

Star Wars: Clone Wars Movie

May 9, 2008

There is a new kid on the block. Star Wars: Clone Wars and new TV series based on the movie for Cartoon Network. Most of us were caught unaware of this event. Was this a plan from the Empire? (Lucas Empire)  There is not much fanfare for the new Star Wars saga in the franchise. Could it be that something is amiss in Lucas Land? The movie will jump to a weekly series on Cartoon Network after the theatrical journey. This CG laced adventure seems out of place, Fox is not carrying the movie or the series. Warner is now behind this project.  Releasing a trailer a day or two before the opening of a movie can either spell over confidence of disaster for a movie. Aimed at a younger audience it will find way to the hardcore fans. They will be the final jury. The media only has a poster to go by, most of the industry were not aware of this movie or series, the hype was just as existing as Yoda in hiding. All will be forgiven if this new venture lives up to the the rest of the franchise. With 300 animators working 3 years on the film, limits set by real action with leap to new bounds in this exciting series. Watch trailer >>

Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua

May 6, 2008

Disney is going to the dogs. How can you go wrong with the latest from Disney. They proved many wrong with Underdog, now Cheech Marin will voice a new CG movie about a Chihuahua living in Beverly Hills. Stereotypical of course, this movie will carry the usual cliches associated with the actor. From first glance, this movie can go any direction. Helmed by the director of Scooby Doo, Raja Gosnell, this movie could be a sleeper blockbuster.

Dr. Who Plays The Prisoner

May 3, 2008

After many false starts, The Prisoner, looks to have legs once again to make it as a new re-versioned series. Now for every time that announcement came out would equal the attempts Number Six tried to escape the village. Christopher Eccleston is rumored once again to play Number Six. For those unaware Christopher Eccleston was the first "new era" Dr. Who who left the popular series because he did not want to be typecast in the role. The Prisoner is a cult series that finds new fans year after year. This is one show that should not be tampered with, campy at times with "the rovers" and other outlandish Number Two characters. If you are not a fan, this is one series that will fall on the wayside of Hollywood’s adaptation of "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy." The Prisoner was a show that worked on many levels and personal perception that also typecast Patrick McGoohan for life. Now in his eighties, the actor has tried to disassociate from the show. He has become in sense a prisoner of his own fame. Read more>>

Warner making making a “Bone” with Jeff Smith

March 8, 2008

Give them a "Bone". Warner Brothers has acquired the film rights to Jeff Smith’s much acclaimed self published series.  With hard work and perseverance, good things will happen. With a solid run of continuous selling of Scholastic’s colored versions of Jeff’s original black and white series, which ran from 1991 till 2004. No word yet of exactly what will be produced if either animation or live action with CGI. Considering Jeff’s run with DC Comics with his version of Shazam, it was only natural that Warner would approach him since they also own DC Comics. This can only be good news for Boneville.

Warner’s Popeye a failure

February 25, 2008

Popeye the Sailor: 1933-1938, Vol. 1 the DVD collection was at most a farce. This overly priced set was only meant for the serious collector and alienated the regular folks and the little ones with an over priced 4 disc set of quality cartoons. Least we forget, cartoons were made for all ages and mostly kids and with a set like this and considering the fact that most of the toons can be had in the public domain at some point. Why go this direction and starve a good chunk of a hungry audience, instead of admitting a failed campaign Warner is now changing their tune on second set of the sequel to the Popeye’s earlier cartoons. Instead of releasing another expensive set, they will break the box set into two series. Could it be they want to squeeze a few more bucks out of two to pay for volume one which still stands in most stores. Time will tell if we will fall for this promotion. It’s disappointing that they were not able to re-energize this under appreciated franchise with a miscalculated pricing scheme. Warner has put out cartoon fare of inferior quality at cheaper bargain prices in the past. Time will judge this as a failed project but the real collectors are the winners, not me and you.
